Today is my son's birthday. I have always tried to keep birthday celebrations to a minimum and with the least hassle when my children were younger. However, by now, we have honoured this special day in simple ways thrice. We all know that birthdays are very important to most people. Yet, I never truly knew the real reason and the immense power it holds until recently.
I came to know a 40-year old lady whose birthday was never acknowledged, let alone celebrated, by her mother. And of course, her mother was very uncaring towards her when she was young. With no celebrations nor acknowledgements of her birthday year after year, her wait was forever. Gradually, her wait grew into impatience, hatred and subsequently deep resentment.
The impact of having no birthday celebration at all and her mother's nonchalant ways were so great that her relationship with her mother soured and is extremely difficult to reconcile even today. She is still disappointed and badly hurt over it. She cried bitterly when she retold her story. If her mother had made the effort to celebrate her birthday despite her apathetic parenting attitude, I am sure things would have turned out quite differently today.
Celebrating and acknowledging a person's birthday is more than acknowledging the day itself. It honours a person's being and thanks his presence in our lives. The act of honouring a person nourishes him like tonic to the soul. It makes the person feel loved and wanted. The contrary could be close to the real-life example illustrated above.
Celebrate your loved ones' brithdays! It need not be the most pompous, yet it can still be the loudest.
In violet love and joy,
